Is Pensionado the right route for you?
Pensionado residency is a temporary immigration category for applicants with a qualifying lifetime pension. The pension must be documented by the appropriate issuing authority and meet the monthly income requirement. It is a legal route to residence, not a guarantee of approval or automatic citizenship.

Lifetime payments
The certification needs to establish the lifetime nature of the pension. A savings balance alone does not meet this test.

What documents will you need?
Your checklist depends on your nationality, residence history, and family circumstances. Confirm it before requesting certificates so that authentication, translation, and filing dates can be coordinated.
Documents from abroad
- Pension certification showing the amount and lifetime nature of the benefit.
- Birth certificate.
- Required criminal background certificate.
- Marriage and family documents for eligible dependents, when applicable.
Application and local steps
- Passport and required copies.
- Application form and supporting letter.
- Photographs and government payment receipts.
- Fingerprint registration and consular registration, where applicable.
- Accepted Spanish translations of documents issued in another language.

Understand your costs before you begin
The pension is an eligibility requirement, not a fee paid to the government. Your application budget should separate legal services, government payments, document expenses, and ongoing obligations.
Legal services
Request a written quote for the principal applicant and any dependents. It should identify the work included and payment schedule.
Government and documents
Allow for applicable filing charges, post-approval payments, any required security deposit, certificates, apostilles, and translations.
Ongoing obligations
Plan separately for CAJA contributions and future renewals. These are not one-time legal application fees.

Pensionado residency: common questions
Is Pensionado residency permanent?
No. Pensionado is a temporary residency category. After three consecutive years of temporary residency, eligible applicants can apply for permanent residency. The change is a separate application, not an automatic approval.
Does Social Security qualify?
A lifetime Social Security retirement benefit can support an application when its amount and documentation meet the requirements. We review the actual benefit and pension letter rather than relying only on the name of the benefit.
Do I have to be a certain age?
The central requirement is a qualifying lifetime pension, rather than a fixed retirement age. The pension evidence must establish that the payments qualify.
Can I use savings or rental income instead?
Savings, investment withdrawals, and rental income are not themselves a lifetime pension. If you do not have a qualifying pension, ask us to review a different residency route, such as Rentista.
Can my spouse and children apply with me?
Eligible spouses and dependent children can apply as dependents. Each applicant needs supporting documents, and separate costs apply. We confirm eligibility and the family document list before filing.
Can I work in Costa Rica as a Pensionado resident?
Pensionado status is not unrestricted permission to take local employment. Tell us about any intended work or business activity so the relevant authorization can be reviewed.
Do I need to live in Costa Rica full-time?
Residency obligations and citizenship requirements are different. Law 8764 includes cancellation grounds for temporary residents absent for more than two consecutive years, subject to exceptions. Renewals and other obligations still apply.
How much does CAJA cost?
CAJA assesses the applicable insurance classification and contribution. The payment is an ongoing expense separate from the application budget. Request guidance for your circumstances instead of relying on a universal percentage.
Can I start before moving?
Yes, eligibility review and document planning can begin from abroad. We help you coordinate foreign documents with local appointments and the intended filing date.
