Which citizenship route fits your circumstances?
Citizenship in Costa Rica is separate from immigration residency. Naturalization applications are handled by the Civil Registry within the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE), rather than DGME. The route determines which periods, documents, and other conditions must be established.
Through residence
The residence route requires five years of official residence for Central Americans, Ibero-Americans, and Spaniards by birth, or seven years for other nationalities. Confirm which rule applies to your nationality.
Through marriage
This route requires two years of marriage to a Costa Rican and the required residence in Costa Rica after marriage, alongside the other applicable conditions. Marriage alone is insufficient.
Through a Costa Rican parent
A nationality registration or option process can apply to some children of Costa Ricans. It is distinct from the standard naturalization routes and needs a separate assessment.

Years since receiving a DIMEX or marrying are not, on their own, a complete eligibility calculation. We review the relevant dates, residence evidence, and travel history against your route.
The marriage route has its own checklist
Confirm the Costa Rican marriage registration and evidence of the required residence after marriage. Do not use the residence route’s document or examination checklist interchangeably.
Residency remains a separate obligation
A pending citizenship application is not a substitute for maintaining the immigration status and documentation applicable to you.

What documents and evidence will you need?
We prepare a checklist for your specific naturalization route. Confirm freshness requirements before ordering foreign records; do not reuse a residency checklist without review.
Core application records
- Application and any required representation document.
- Identity evidence accepted for your route.
- Authenticated birth certificate and applicable criminal background certificate.
- Official Spanish translations where required.
- Photograph and applicable fiscal stamps.
- Route-specific residence and family evidence.
Additional residence-route evidence
Prepare for review of means of livelihood, witness declarations, examination evidence or an applicable exemption, and other required declarations. Publication steps also need coordination.
The marriage route uses its own requirements. We confirm what applies rather than requesting every residence-route document from every applicant.

Legal fees and document expenses
The legal service fee for the principal applicant is US$1,200 in three payments. Legal representation and document costs are separate from the public authority’s naturalization service.
Three US$400 payments
- US$400 at signup.
- US$400 when the application is filed.
- US$400 when naturalization is approved.
Your written proposal identifies the route, services included, and any separate family applications.
Document expenses
The original page budgets US$150 for translations and US$100 for certifications, with translations at US$25 per page. Actual documents and page counts determine the cost.
Additional expenses
Budget separately for foreign certificates, authentication, shipping, and any applicable examination, publication, or other third-party expenses. Confirm each item before payment.
TSE service
The official TSE checklists describe the naturalization service as free. Required stamps and document expenses remain separate. Residency application charges, DIMEX fees, and security deposits are not naturalization filing fees.
There is no single automatic family naturalization package. Any additional applicant or nationality procedure needs a separately confirmed scope and quote.
How your naturalization application moves forward
Confirm the route and evidence
We review the qualifying period and arrange the document plan, including any examinations or exemption review required for your route.
Submit to the Civil Registry
We prepare the application and coordinate follow-up, notices, additional evidence, and applicable publication steps.
Follow the final instructions
Complete the authority’s remaining formalities. National identity documentation and any passport application are separate from preparing the naturalization file.
The TSE’s published checklists list 285 working days as the resolution period for the residence and marriage procedures. This is an official reference, not a promised completion date for your file. Document procurement, examination scheduling where applicable, and additional requests affect your overall plan.
Questions about citizenship in Costa Rica
Is citizenship the same as permanent residency?
No. Permanent residency is an immigration status. Naturalization is a separate nationality process handled by the Civil Registry within the TSE.
Do I qualify after five or seven years?
The rule depends on nationality and the applicable residence route. We review which period applies and the evidence that supports your calculation.
Does marriage automatically make me a citizen?
No. The marriage route has its own qualifying period and evidence requirements, followed by an application and decision.
Do all applicants need Spanish and civics examinations?
Examinations and exemptions must be checked by route and circumstances. Do not assume the residence-route examination requirements apply to the marriage route.
Can I use the documents from my residency application?
Have them reviewed first. Naturalization has its own validity and authentication requirements, and old residency documents should not be assumed acceptable.
Will my children automatically be included?
Family nationality consequences and separate applications require individual review. Do not assume that everyone in a residency family file is included in one citizenship application.
Must I renounce my existing nationality?
Costa Rica permits dual nationality. The consequences under your existing country’s law still require review, especially if that country restricts multiple nationality.

How long does naturalization take?

Should I keep renewing my residency while waiting?
A citizenship application does not itself replace immigration status. Review and maintain the residency and identity-document obligations applicable to you while the naturalization process is pending.
