A direct route to permanent residency
Residency for parents of Costa Rican citizens is based on a qualifying family relationship. Under Article 78 of Law 8764, parents of Costa Rican citizens can apply directly for permanent residency. Approval requires an application; having a child does not automatically grant the parent immigration status.
Citizenship confirmed
Your child’s Costa Rican citizenship must be established in the relevant records. Place of birth alone is not a substitute for confirming nationality.
Parentage documented
The accepted civil records must establish that you are the legal parent. We review discrepancies or missing registrations before filing.
No pension or investment threshold
This family route does not use the financial thresholds of Pensionado, Rentista, or Investor residency. Application and post-approval expenses still apply.
Start with your family records
If your child was born in Costa Rica
We review the birth registration and citizenship record. For a child born to foreign parents, the applicable nationality process must be completed before citizenship can be relied on for the application.
If your child was born abroad
We check whether Costa Rican nationality has been established and the birth registered as required. This route concerns the citizenship and legal relationship, rather than only the place of birth.
If both parents want to apply
Each parent’s eligibility and documents need separate review. Marriage to the other parent is not the basis of this application.

What documents will you need?
We confirm your checklist against the family records, your nationality, residence history, and intended filing date before you order documents.
Proof of the family connection
- Applicable Costa Rican Civil Registry certification establishing your child’s nationality and parentage.
- Additional registration or parentage evidence if the records need clarification.
- Supporting civil documents for your circumstances, when required.
Your application documents
- Passport and required copies.
- Birth and criminal background certificates required for your case.
- Application form and supporting letter.
- Photographs and applicable government payment receipts.
- Local fingerprints and consular registration where applicable.
- Accepted Spanish translations and authentication of foreign documents.
Read our apostille guide and background check guide. Document validity should be coordinated with filing, not assumed from a generic checklist.
Plan your application budget
Ask for a written proposal identifying each applicant, the legal work included, payment options, and separate expenses. There is no need to mix government charges with the legal service fee.
Legal service fee: US$750
The published fee for the main applicant is payable in three installments:
- US$250 retainer to begin.
- US$250 when the application is filed.
- US$250 when residency is approved.
Your written proposal confirms the services included and any fees for additional applicants.
Government payments
- Application: US$250.
- DIMEX identity card: US$128.
- Security deposit: budget from US$300, subject to the amount applicable to your passport nationality and case.
These are the planning figures published on our service page. Confirm the applicable payments and exemptions in your written estimate.
Document expenses
The published estimate allows US$150 for translations and US$100 for certifications. Translation pricing is US$25 per page; the actual total depends on the documents and number of pages.
Budget separately for foreign certificates, background checks, apostilles, shipping, applicable CAJA contributions, and future renewals. These estimates are not an all-inclusive quote.

How we help you move forward
Confirm citizenship and parentage
We review the family connection and identify any registration issues before preparing the application.
Coordinate your documents
We help prepare the required evidence and submit the application to DGME through the appropriate channel.
Complete approval requirements
We follow up on the file and coordinate applicable CAJA, payments, and DIMEX steps after approval.
The service page publishes a planning estimate of 6–12 months for application processing, depending on case volume and the completeness of the file. Document procurement comes before filing and adds its own time.
After approval, complete applicable CAJA enrollment, remaining payments, and the DIMEX appointment. The original process graphic estimates 2–3 weeks for card delivery; confirm current availability and delivery arrangements when scheduling. These are published estimates, not guaranteed deadlines.

Questions about residency as a parent
Is this temporary or permanent residency?
A qualifying parent of a Costa Rican citizen can apply directly for permanent residency under Article 78 of Law 8764. There is no requirement to first complete three years of temporary residency for this family route.
Does a birth in Costa Rica automatically establish citizenship?
Do not assume that the place of birth alone proves citizenship. For children of foreign parents, the applicable nationality and registration process must be completed. We review the Civil Registry records before relying on the child’s citizenship.
What if my child was born outside Costa Rica?
The relevant question is whether your child is a Costa Rican citizen and whether your legal parent-child relationship is documented. Birth abroad does not by itself rule out this route. Registration and nationality records need individual review.
Do I need to be married to the other parent?
The basis of this route is your legal relationship with a Costa Rican citizen, rather than marriage. The parent-child relationship must be established in the accepted records.
Can both foreign parents apply?
Each qualifying foreign parent can be assessed for an application based on their own relationship with the Costa Rican child. Each parent needs the required documentation and pays the applicable expenses.
Is a pension or investment required?
This route is based on the qualifying family relationship, rather than Pensionado, Rentista, or Investor financial thresholds. Government payments, document expenses, and insurance obligations still need to be addressed.
Can I work as soon as I submit the application?
Submitting an application does not itself grant permanent resident status or automatic permission to work. Approved permanent residency allows employment, subject to the rules of the activity or profession. Confirm any work plans while your case is pending.
How long does approval take?
The published planning estimate is 6–12 months for application processing, excluding document preparation and post-approval steps. The original graphic estimates 2–3 weeks for DIMEX delivery after the relevant registration steps. Confirm current timing for your case; neither estimate is a guaranteed deadline.
Does this give me Costa Rican citizenship?
No. Permanent residency is an immigration status. Citizenship requires a separate process and its own eligibility and residence requirements.
What happens after I send an inquiry?
Our team reviews your situation and contacts you by email about the next step. Submitting an inquiry does not commit you to a service agreement.
