Residency for Investors, known as the Inversionista Residency, is a type of legal residency granted to foreigners who make a qualifying investment in Costa Rica. It is part of the country’s strategy to attract foreign capital and promote economic development.

What Is It?

The Investor Residency is granted to individuals who invest at least $150,000 USD in a qualified Costa Rican asset or project. The most common investment options include:

  • Real estate (land, homes, or commercial property)

  • A Costa Rican business (new or existing company)

  • Forestry or tourism projects officially approved by the government

  • Investment portfolios or development projects that comply with Costa Rican law

As of 2021, the minimum investment threshold was reduced from $200,000 to $150,000 USD to encourage more foreign investment.
