Residency for Religious Workers, officially known as Residencia Temporal para Religiosos, is a special category of temporary residency granted to foreign religious personnel—such as priests, ministers, nuns, missionaries, or members of religious orders—who are coming to Costa Rica to carry out faith-based, humanitarian, or ecclesiastical work.

What Is It?

This residency is designed for members of legally recognized religious organizations who have been assigned to serve in Costa Rica. To qualify, the religious entity must:

  • Be officially registered with the Costa Rican government

  • Issue a formal letter of sponsorship or appointment confirming the applicant’s role, purpose, and duration of stay

  • Provide documentation proving the organization’s legal status in Costa Rica

Applicants must also present:

  • A criminal background check

  • A valid passport

  • An official letter from their church or religious institution outlining their mission in Costa Rica

This residency does not allow secular employment, but holders can carry out religious, educational, or community service activities related to their faith.
