Residency for Rentistas is a temporary residency category in Costa Rica designed for financially self-sufficient individuals who do not yet qualify as retirees, but who can demonstrate a stable, long-term income from non-employment sources. It’s ideal for digital nomads, early retirees, or people living off investments or savings.

What Is It?

The Rentista residency requires the applicant to prove a guaranteed income of at least $2,500 USD per month for a minimum of 2 years, which totals $60,000 USD. This amount must be:

  • Guaranteed by a financial institution, such as a bank or investment fund, OR

  • Deposited into a Costa Rican bank account, often in full at the time of application

The applicant cannot work as an employee but can own a business and receive income from it.

Other requirements include:

  • Police background check

  • Proof of identity and nationality

  • Apostilled/legalized and translated financial documents
