A residency route for a documented religious assignment
Religious worker residency in Costa Rica is a temporary immigration category for qualifying foreign religious personnel. The application links your documented role with a religious association or congregation and its applicable registration records.
Clergy, members of religious orders, and missionaries should confirm that their assignment fits the category. A faith-based connection or an invitation to volunteer does not alone establish eligibility.
A qualifying organization
We review the sponsoring association or congregation, its legal status, and the registration evidence required for the application.
A defined assignment
The organization’s supporting evidence identifies your membership or role, the purpose of your stay, and the assignment period.
A complete personal file
Your passport, civil documents, background certificate, and other required records must be prepared for filing.
Confirm the organization’s records first
Foreign Affairs registration
The religious category requires evidence of the association or congregation’s registration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship. We check the applicable records before preparing the individual application.
Organization work is a separate scope
If a registration or organizational document is missing, additional work can be necessary before filing. Your proposal should identify whether organizational registration services are included or separately quoted.
Different organizations have different evidence
Catholic religious personnel and organizations registered with Immigration have specific provisions affecting the supporting documents. We confirm the applicable checklist rather than treating every sponsor identically.

What documents will you need?
We review both the sponsor’s records and your personal circumstances. Nationality, residence history, accompanying family, and the organization’s registrations determine the final checklist.

Questions about religious worker residency
Who can apply for religious worker residency?
Qualifying foreign religious personnel assigned to serve with an appropriate religious association or congregation can be assessed for this temporary category. The sponsor, role, and supporting records must meet the applicable requirements.
Does any faith-based volunteer qualify?
No. The activity and sponsor must fit the category. A short volunteer visit, NGO assignment, or educational role needs an individual assessment rather than automatic treatment as religious residency.
Does the organization need to be registered?
The religious category requires applicable registration evidence with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship. Separate Immigration registration can affect the procedure and supporting documents. We review both where relevant.
What if our organization is not registered?
We first identify the missing registration and documents. Completing organizational requirements is a separate scope of work that should be included in your proposal or quoted separately.
Can my spouse and children apply?
Eligible dependents can be reviewed under the selected route. They require their own supporting records and fees. The published dependent legal fee under the selected three-payment plan is US$600; your proposal confirms its payment schedule.
Does this status permit other employment?
Religious residency should not be treated as unrestricted permission to take unrelated secular employment. The approved activity and any additional authorization need review before you accept other work.
What is the legal service fee?
The principal-applicant fee is US$1,200 in three US$400 payments: signup, filing, and approval. Government payments, document expenses, and separately scoped organizational registration work are additional.
How long will the application take?
The page publishes a 6–12 month processing estimate. Sponsor registration, document readiness, and the filing channel affect timing. Ask for a current estimate for your case.
Will I need CAJA and a DIMEX card?
After approval, follow the insurance, payment, and documentation requirements stated in your resolution. CAJA contributions and future renewals are separate from the initial legal service fee.
What happens if my assignment or sponsor changes?
Review changes to the organization, role, or assignment period before relying on the existing authorization. Renewal and any change of category depend on your circumstances and the applicable rules.
Explore the legal framework
Article 79(2) of Law 8764 identifies the religious temporary residency category. Articles 80–82 of the Reglamento de Extranjería address its supporting documents and specific provisions. Confirm current filing requirements with DGME and the applicable organizational records with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship.
