Costa Rica Residency Renewal: DIMEX Requirements, Fees and Appointments
Costa Rica Residency Renewal: DIMEX Requirements, Fees and Appointments
Prepare your documents, understand the costs, and choose the right next step for your DIMEX renewal.
Get help with my renewalCosta Rica residency renewal starts with three checks: the expiration date on your DIMEX, the immigration category you hold, and the requirements for the office handling your appointment. Arrange the appropriate renewal channel, confirm your CCSS insurance position, prepare the required documents and payments, and keep proof of your application while the new document is processed.
Your DIMEX is the identity document that records your immigration status. Renewing a temporary residence authorization, renewing a permanent resident’s card, and replacing a lost card are different procedures. Identifying the right one at the beginning helps you avoid booking the wrong service or paying the wrong amount.
This guide explains how to prepare, where to check appointments, and which costs and deadlines deserve attention. For the broader immigration framework, read our complete guide to obtaining residency in Costa Rica.

When Should You Start Your Costa Rica Residency Renewal?
As a practical planning step, begin reviewing your renewal about three months before the card expires. That gives you time to check appointment availability, resolve insurance issues and obtain any additional evidence. It is a preparation recommendation, not a statement that every office accepts a renewal application three months early.
Check the actual filing window with your selected provider. Put the card’s expiration date and your appointment date in your calendar separately. If the appointment offered falls after expiration, ask what evidence and procedure apply to the gap; do not assume that booking alone extends the card’s validity.
If you are outside Costa Rica, plan this review before arranging your return. An airline, a bank and Immigration do not necessarily use the same document checks.
Where Can You Renew Your DIMEX?
Correos de Costa Rica
Correos offers DIMEX renewal through its designated Ventanillas Electrónicas de Servicios, known as VES. Its official DIMEX service page identifies 25 service points and links to the requirements. This does not mean every post office handles renewals.
Check the current Correos DIMEX checklist and confirm the appointment arrangements before traveling to a branch. Be careful to read the renewal section rather than the first-issuance or replacement section.
Banco de Costa Rica
BCR lists DIMEX among the services offered through Punto País. Its official appointment system is the starting point for checking the available service and location.
BCR’s published DIMEX instructions require current CCSS insurance, payment of the corresponding charge at the appointment using cash or a BCR card, and arrival ten minutes early. Check the requirements for the particular transaction before booking.
Directly With Immigration
Some files require attention from the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería rather than a routine appointment through a service provider. A change of category, a substantially overdue card or an issue with the underlying authorization needs review before choosing a channel.
Use DGME’s official website to check the relevant service. Older instructions about particular days for seniors or automatic same-day issuance should not be treated as a standing appointment arrangement without current confirmation.
What Documents Should You Prepare?
Start with your current or expired DIMEX, passport, CCSS insurance information and the payment evidence requested for your transaction. The exact package depends on your status and the office’s current instructions.
Correos’ renewal checklist calls for an identity document in good condition, proof of the applicable payments and current Social Security coverage. It does not establish one identical payment for every immigration subcategory.
Before your appointment, compare the spelling of your name, passport number and other identifying details across your records. A renewed passport or a change in personal circumstances deserves attention before the appointment. Carry the originals and the copies requested by the provider; do not assume that photographs on your phone will substitute for them.
Does Your Residency Category Change the Preparation?
Yes. The supporting evidence for a temporary category needs to be checked against the basis of that authorization. The following are review points, rather than a substitute for your official checklist.
| Your situation | What to review before the appointment |
|---|---|
| Pensionado | The pension evidence requested for your renewal and any authentication or translation requirements. |
| Rentista | The accepted evidence of continuing qualifying income. |
| Investor | The investment records relevant to your approved category and any change in ownership or structure. |
| Marriage to a Costa Rican | The relationship evidence and conditions applicable to your marriage-based status. |
| Permanent resident | The document-renewal requirements for your permanent status, rather than a new Pensionado, Rentista or Investor application. |
| Dependent | The principal applicant’s renewal position and the evidence of the continuing relationship. |
The Reglamento de Extranjería addresses category-specific renewals. Ordering a new pension letter or foreign certificate before checking what your file requires can create unnecessary work and expense.
If you have changed your business, sold an investment, separated from your spouse or experienced another relevant change, raise it before proceeding with a routine renewal.
How Much Does DIMEX Renewal Cost?
Separate the government payments from the provider’s service charge, document expenses and any legal assistance. A figure quoted for another resident is not enough to establish your own total.
| Cost component | What to budget for |
|---|---|
| Government payments | The amount applicable to your subcategory and transaction, confirmed before payment. |
| Correos service charge | The currently linked checklist lists ₡9,194.70 plus IVA for appointments through Correos. |
| Other provider charges | Confirm BCR’s applicable charges if using its service; do not substitute the Correos charge. |
| Late-renewal charges | Additional payments if the late-renewal rules apply. |
| Documents and professional help | Any required certificates, translations, certifications and separately agreed legal service. |
The Correos figure was checked against the document linked from its official service page on October 17, 2026. Confirm the current amount before paying.
Ask for the payment instructions for your specific renewal instead of relying on a bank account number copied from an old article. Keep the receipt and check that the applicant’s identifying information is correct.
Our pricing page explains the distinction between legal fees, government charges and document services. Initial residency application packages are not renewal quotes; request the scope and price for the renewal work you need.
Why Your CAJA Position Matters
CCSS insurance compliance is part of renewal. Review both your current position and any gap in coverage before the appointment. A recent payment receipt does not necessarily resolve an older registration or coverage issue.
Check each family member’s insurance position rather than assuming the principal applicant’s payment settles every dependent’s record. If something is missing or inconsistent, obtain clarification through the appropriate CCSS channel before your renewal appointment.
Our CAJA guide for residents explains how insurance fits into residency planning. Keep healthcare contributions in your ongoing budget, separately from the cost of renewing the identity document.
What Happens at the Appointment and Afterward?
Bring the requested records, payment evidence and appointment confirmation. Allow time to check your details before the transaction is completed. Confirm how you will receive the document, what proof you should retain, and which instructions apply while you wait.
Delivery depends on the channel. Correos publishes a one-month delivery reference for collection at the selected branch. BCR publishes an approximate eight-to-ten-business-day delivery reference on its Punto País page. These are provider references, not a guaranteed completion date for every file.
Before planning a trip, ask how a pending renewal affects the documents you will need for departure and return. Also check directly with your airline and any institution that needs to verify your identity. A renewal receipt should not be assumed to satisfy every organization’s requirements.
When the new DIMEX arrives, verify your name, identification details, category and expiration date. Keep the new renewal date in your records rather than assuming it will match a previous card’s duration.
What If Your DIMEX Has Already Expired?
A late renewal requires more attention than paying an extra charge. Article 254 of Immigration Law No. 8764 establishes a US$3 charge per month or fraction of a month for renewal beyond thirty days after expiration. Confirm the calculation for your case.
Article 129 also identifies failure to renew within three months after expiration as a cancellation ground, subject to documented exceptions. Do not treat those three months as a safe waiting period, or assume an explanatory letter guarantees acceptance.
If your card is overdue, review the elapsed time, your travel history and the reason for the delay before booking a standard appointment. Retain evidence supporting the circumstances. An unresolved notice or a significant absence from Costa Rica also needs individual assessment.
Ask CRI to review your renewal situation if you are unsure whether your file still fits the routine process.
Should You Renew or Apply for Permanent Residency?
A renewal keeps the existing authorization or document current. A change to permanent residency is a separate application.
After three consecutive years of temporary residency, eligibility for that separate application can be reviewed under Article 78 of Law 8764. Time as a tourist is not the same as time holding temporary residency. Permanent residents also renew their DIMEX; permanent status does not mean the identity document remains valid indefinitely.
Compare the available routes in our residency guide before deciding which procedure to request. A pending change-of-category application should not be treated as an automatic substitute for addressing an expiring document.
Frequently Asked Questions About Costa Rica Residency Renewal
Can I renew my DIMEX online?
BCR provides online appointment booking, but booking is not the completed renewal. Follow the attendance and document instructions for your selected provider. Do not assume the entire transaction can be handled remotely.
Do I need a new background check for every renewal?
Do not assume every routine renewal needs a new foreign background certificate. Confirm the checklist for your category and circumstances, particularly after an extended absence or a late renewal. Our background-check guide explains the document’s separate authentication and timing issues.
Can my spouse and children renew with me?
Coordinate the family’s renewals, but confirm the sequence before booking. Article 212 of the regulations requires verification that the principal has renewed and the relationship continues before the dependent’s renewal is authorized. Appointment scheduling and authorization are separate questions.
Can someone over 65 renew without an appointment?
Confirm the current arrangement directly with the office. Do not travel based only on older claims about Thursday or Friday walk-ins or same-day delivery.
Will I receive a physical or digital DIMEX?
Ask the provider which format and delivery arrangements apply to your transaction. The general pages reviewed do not establish that every renewal automatically includes both formats. Keep your contact information current and retain the instructions supplied at the appointment.
How do I know which fees apply to me?
Identify your subcategory and transaction, then obtain the provider’s payment instructions. Separate government charges from service charges, late charges and professional fees. A first-time application price is not the price of a renewal.
